The Project

Cervical and breast cancer screening in Nigeria.
Goals: 
  • Strengthening of the Histopathology Laboratory of the Federal Medical Center Hospital in Owerri
  • Training of 8 local Cytoscreeners (6 from the Federal Medical Center Hospital, 2 from the Teaching Hospital University of Owerri) for the diagnosis of Pap Tests
  • Training of local staff for carrying out Pap tests and collecting samples
  • Organization of second level procedures and surgical treatment
  • Training of local staff in colposcopy and LEEP procedures
  • Training of local staff in mammography and breast-conserving surgery techniques

What we have done

  • 125 peripheral sampling centers have been established for the execution of Pap tests and gynecological examinations in the city of Owerri, in the suburbs and in rural areas
  • 8 local Cytoscreeners have been trained
  • A Cervical Cancer Screening Unit was started with new spaces for outpatient clinics and hospitalization
  • Local staff were trained on screening campaigns (with the involvement of 180 midwives employed in peripheral centers) and on methods of diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer
