What we have done
Djibouti - All the diagnostic reagents and equipment necessary to the implementation of the Pathology lab at the Balbala Hospital have been purchased, shipped and delivered. The new machines have been installed and tested successfully. The training of local practitioners on the new equipment has been performed and there is an ongoing turnover of Italian doctors and medical technologists to support the daily work of the lab, the diagnostic team and the ongoing training of local staff. Immunohistochemical testing has been introduced and integrated in the procedure routine of the lab, through the delivery of the necessary reagent kits and the training of local doctors and technologists.
Northern Somalia - We have visited and designed the spaces destined to become the Pathology lab. Our staff made of pathologists and lab technicians have successfully installed and tested the equipment that we purchased for the lab.
Together with local representatives from HGH, we have evaluated, defined and already partially completed the training of local personnel. This programme is divided into two parts:
- A theoretical part in which 12 healthcare professionals from HGH had been selected through a final evaluation test.
- A practical part in which 3 lab technicians chosen by the Hospital will be fully trained. Once the training is completed, the 3 technicians will become part of the permanent lab’s staff.
Ethiopia - In preparation for a future intervention in Ethiopia, 3 different missions have taken place with the aim to finalise and consolidate the pre-existing contacts with local healthcare institutions, with the healthcare system and the Italian Diplomatic Representatives. The Kadisco General Hospital in Addis Abeba has been identified as the most suitable starting point for the Project in Ethiopia. A first declaration of intents has been signed with the Kadisco General Hospital, a formal preliminary act aimed at a future and stable collaboration.
