What is the job of a pathologist?
No profession in the healthcare sector is easy to define, and pathology is no exception. What precisely does a pathologist do?
A pathologist (or anatomical pathologist) is a medical doctor specialised in examining biological samples of tissue, or fluids and secretions. Histological or cytological investigations are performed on these samples, at times utilising complex immunological and molecular methods. The aim is to identify the presence of pathological conditions and to implement a complete, reliable and timely diagnosis. This is indispensable for clinicians and surgeons in order to provide effective treatment.
ProjectsOur Organisation is composed of physicians, biologists and biomedic lab technicians specialising in histo-cytopathology. It realises cancer prevention projects in Developing Countries. In order to face the dramatic shortage of local specialised doctors, APOF trains doctors and lab technicians on site and it provides oncological disease diagnoses (occasionally utilising satellite systems of communication to negate physical distances).
Cervical and breast cancer are amongst the most common causes of cancer mortality in the female population of Developing Countries. APOF is also on the frontline organising effective campaigns on prevention and early diagnosis. APOF mission is for anyone, anywhere in the world, to have the right to access comprehensive assistance, from early diagnosis to adequate medical care. |
Especially in the oncology field there cannot be treatment without diagnosis.
